Keeping your teeth healthy includes brushing twice a day to reduce plaque and bacteria, but if your toothbrush is old or worn it’s likely not getting the job done. It’s also important to keep your toothbrush clean of debris and bacteria. Sedki Dentistry in Commerce, MI focuses on educating patients in healthy dental practices starting at home.
Your overall health begins with a clean, healthy mouth.
Last week we talked about how to brush your teeth properly. This week we are offering a few tips on how to take care of your toothbrush. The ADA recommends the following tips for toothbrush care.
- Start with the right toothbrush. A soft bristled brush is best. Hard bristles won’t necessarily clean better, but they can irritate, even damage, gum tissue. Brushes come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Choose what feels most comfortable to you. Kids will fare better with a smaller-sized children’s toothbrush. If you have an infant, you can clean your baby’s gum and teeth, a soft washcloth or gauze, or toothbrush specifically made for babies.
- It’s best to rinse the toothbrush before you use it the first time. You’ll also want to rinse the bristles and handle of your toothbrush thoroughly after each use. This helps remove bacteria, debris, and leftover toothpaste.
- Store your toothbrush upright and in the open air, so it can dry. The ADA does not recommend covering your toothbrush or storing it in a closed container. Doing so leaves the bristles moist and susceptible to microbial growth.
- If your toothbrush is in the holder next to someone else’s, it’s best to keep the bristles from touching to avoid cross contamination of bacteria or germs.
- Replace your old toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner, especially if the bristles are frayed or worn. Using a worn or old toothbrush will simply not be as effective. It’s also a good idea to change your toothbrush if you’ve been sick with a viral or bacterial infection such as strep throat.
- As for the toothbrush sanitizers: the jury is out. Research appears to be inconclusive. If you do choose one make sure it’s approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
