Our goal at Sedki Dentistry is to work with our patients in achieving and maintaining long term dental health and a beautiful smile. Educating our patients in good oral health practices and answering questions about dental health is important to keeping a healthy mouth and smile for life. Here are answers to some common questions that people have about their teeth, specifically enamel.

What Is Enamel:
Enamel is the dense mineral that covers every tooth. As hard as enamel is, it can still be damaged from cracks or chips, erosion, food and bacteria, general wear and tear, and age. Unfortunately, enamel can’t grow back. When enamel is damaged, exposed teeth, roots, gums, and bone are at risk.

What Causes Damage To Enamel:
Acid is extremely harsh on enamel. Acid can come from our bodies (stomach acid) and from our diet. The worst culprit is soda, followed by fruit juice. Surprisingly, flavored water, including sugar- free versions, has citric acid and other additives that can damage enamel. Sugary and starchy snacks (potato chips, white bread, crackers) are also known to wear away at enamel. Even healthy citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and pineapple can be harmful.

Other Common Causes of Enamel Damage:

Certain medicines such as antihistamines and aspirins are acidic. In addition, hundreds of medications have side effects that reduce saliva production. A dry mouth creates a more acidic environment. Stress and grinding have also been known to increase acid production. Diabetes and other diseases, such as celiac disease, can also affect enamel. Some people are born with thin, weak, even missing enamel.

Signs of Enamel Damage:
-Shiny spots on your teeth can indicate mineral damage
-Dark, yellow or see-through teeth may be a sign of enamel wear
Tooth sensitivity can have many causes, including enamel damage
-Uneven edges, cracked or fractured teeth may indicate that the protective enamel is no longer strong enough to withstand pressure
Cavities, tooth loss

Protecting Enamel:

It is important to drink plenty of water. It is also important to rinse your mouth with water after consuming acidic, sugary or starchy foods. Drinking through a straw may also help protect your teeth. Good oral health practices such as brushing twice daily is always highly recommended. If you suffer from dry mouth, make sure to check medications for side effects. That way you’ll know what to expect and be proactive about keeping your mouth moist. Sugarless gum may help increase saliva and remove food particles.
