Children’s oral care is essential from the beginning.  The health of your child’s mouth starts even before that first tooth erupts. Sedki Dentistry in Commerce, MI is dedicated to taking care of your smile and dental health for all ages. Here are a few tips for taking care of and brushing your child’s teeth. It’s never too early to start!

When Should I Start Brushing My Child’s Teeth?
You can gently clean your infant’s gums with a moist washcloth or gauze pad within a few days after birth. Usually between 4 to 14 months that first tooth will erupt.  You can brush your baby’s teeth with an infant toothbrush (an adult toothbrush is too big) or continue to use a wet washcloth or gauze to gently wipe each tooth’s surface.

When Should I Take My Baby To The Dentist For The First Time?

Your child’s first visit to the dentist should be around his or her first birthday or sooner. Your baby can sit right in your lap during the brief dental check up. This visit is a great time to ask any questions about your child’s dental health and oral care, proper brushing techniques and habits such as thumb sucking or pacifier concerns.

How Many Teeth Will My Child Have?
Children have 20 primary teeth, also known as baby teeth. Often, around age three, all primary teeth are in place. These teeth are important to your baby’s health. They’re needed for chewing new foods properly. Primary teeth also hold space for their adult replacements.

When Will My Child Be Old Enough To Brush His Or Her Own Teeth?
It depends on the child, but many can handle the task by seven or eight years old. It’s still a good idea to monitor your child’s techniques and remind them to brush twice a day.

How Can I Get My Children Excited About Brushing Their Teeth?
Parents are the best role models. Brush your teeth twice and day for two minutes, and let your children watch whenever possible.  As they’re learning to brush their own teeth, have fun with it.  Listen to music, dance, or play follow the leader to encourage proper techniques.  If it helps, you can purchase a toothbrush that plays music for two minutes or lights up, helping children stay on task.
