Technology can improve our lives. Vehicle rear-view safety cameras and alarms have prevented countless injuries. Doorbell security cameras have prevented countless thefts. Smartphones have changed the way we communicate and access data. Technology is also improving our ability to step up our oral hygiene routines, keeping our teeth cleaner and cavity free.
Here are two ways to achieve and maintain clean teeth and a brighter healthier smile.
1. Electric Toothbrushes
The cordless rechargeable toothbrush was brought to the American market in the 1960s by the General Electric Company. Sales of electric toothbrushes, which generally have a rechargeable battery, have increased steadily in recent years and are projected to continue to increase over the next five years.1
Easy and Effective
There are a lot of advantages to using an electric toothbrush, with the most important being that various studies have shown that electric toothbrushes are much better than manual toothbrushes in removing plaque and preventing gingivitis and bad breath.2
Electric toothbrushes are easier to use for seniors, young children and others with dexterity issues. Electric toothbrushes were found to provide better cleaning than manual toothbrushes because an electric toothbrush can provide up to 30,000 strokes per minute compared to a human’s hand, which can do 300 strokes per minute.3
Thoroughness with AI
Timers on electric toothbrushes also help people stay on track with the American Dental Association recommended two minute brush time during which you reach all four quadrants of the mouth. Artificial intelligence or AI technology is making it possible for electric toothbrush owners to receive feedback on their brushing patterns and technique. AI can analyze and provide feedback on pressure exerted, angle, and duration of brushing helping to improve oral hygiene routines.4
2. Water Flossers
Don’t forget to floss!
The concept of dental floss has been around since 1815 when a New Orleans dentist, Levi Spear Parmly, instructed his patients to use a thin silk thread to clean between their teeth.5 Cleaning between the teeth with a water flosser gets into places where a brush can’t go.
Water flossers use a concentrated stream of water to flush out plaque and debris. One of the main advantages of water flossers is that many people find them easier and more convenient to use than string dental floss. This is especially true for people with braces and bridges as well as implants, crowns and other restorative dental work. Using a water flosser has been found in studies to remove up to 87.23 percent of plaque bacteria which is very close to the 89.09 percent achieved by users of string floss.6
Water flossing is gentler on your gums than string floss, greatly reducing the incidence of gum bleeding. Clinical studies have revealed that water flossing can significantly reduce gingival inflammation, bleeding and plaque biofilm in diabetics, a group more prone to periodontal diseases.7
Brushing, Flossing and Regular Dental Visits
Introducing either an electric toothbrush or a water flosser to your oral hygiene routine can go a long way in improving your dental check-ups and reducing oral health issues. Your dentist or hygienist can help you decide which toothbrush or water flosser is right for you and can educate you on how to properly use the new tools in your dental arsenal. #####
