In our previous posts, we’ve included lots of ideas on what foods are best to enjoy over the holidays and what foods are better to avoid altogether. Here are a few additional holiday tips that are great for kids!
Stocking Treats. Skip the Sugar
The holidays are already full of sugar, no need to pile on with even more cavity-causing treats. Sure candy is affordable and a favorite that takes up some much-needed stocking space, but there are plenty of alternatives. Sugar-free gum in their stocking is an excellent option. Most kids won’t even notice the missing sugar. Plus sugar-free gum can actually help reduce cavities!
Chewing gum for just twenty minutes helps remove hidden or sticky food particles and increases saliva which naturally reduces bacteria.
Other fun alternatives include a musical or light up toothbrush, and unique flavored dental floss (cupcake, bacon and dill pickle!). And if you really can’t resist candy choose dark chocolate (60% or higher cocoa) which has less sugar and additional health benefits.
Dance/Carol While You Brush
It can be hard to remember to brush for two full minutes, especially during this busy season. Although you can’t actually sing while brushing, pop in holiday music to brush to while you dance. And while you’re at it, you can do the following:
Take A Video Selfie
A recent study showed that participants brushed their teeth more accurately if they videotaped the action. More effective toothbrushing can lead to a healthier smile and engages kids in a fun way. We found some articles on videotaping and taking selfies while brushing your teeth to be very helpful!
Get Creative With Your Healthy Snacks
Have your kids use small cookie cutters to create fun cheese shapes. Add a cut strawberry “Santa hat” to the top of a grape, adhere with a dab of cream cheese between the grape and strawberry hat, and a dollop of cream cheese on top for the white ball. Also, smoothies are always a hit and good for your teeth and bones. It’s fun to make fruit and greek yogurt smoothies together.
Or Concentrate Less On Food and Treats, and More on Activities
Eating and holidays often go hand to hand. If you’re looking for ways to exchange the constant grazing for something more active try these family activities: neighborhood caroling, game night, holiday trivia, outdoor fun and more!
Stop Using Your Teeth As Tools
This is a major no, no! Pull out the nutcrackers, or better yet, set out ready to eat nuts (they’re actually really good for you) Also, have scissors at hand to cut ribbons, open boxes and remove packaging tape.
