While relatively easy to maintain, dentures require proper care for comfort and long-term wear.  Here are some basic guidelines for denture care.

DO:

  • Recognize that it may take a few weeks to get used to your dentures. During this short period, your dentist may have you wear your dentures full time to help your mouth adjust.
  • Clean your dentures every day. Just like real teeth, dentures can stain. Dentures also retain oral bacteria and food particles. Rinse your dentures thoroughly using mild water and food debris. Next, brush your dentures with a soft-bristled wet toothbrush and denture cleanser, and then a final rinse.  When your dentures are out, it’s a good time to brush your natural teeth with fluoride (or your dentist’s recommended) toothpaste.
  • Give your dentures–and your gums—a break every night, at least six hours. This gives your mouth and gums and opportunity to rest from the friction and wear.  Store them in lukewarm water or a denture cleaning solution.
  • Dentures are not as strong as real teeth and will wear down over time. Talk to your dentist about replacing your dentures around the five-year mark.
  • Check the health of your gums daily. If you notice swelling, pain, blood, sensitivity or discomfort it may be related to your dentures or other oral concerns that should be addressed.
  • Do talk to your dentist if your dentures click when you eat or if they don’t appear to fit properly.
  • Visit your dentist regularly, even if you have a full set of dentures. Oral care includes your entire mouth.

DON’ T:

  • Put dentures in hot water.
  • Allow your dentures to dry out. This can damage the dentures or change their shape.
  • Use regular toothpaste. It can scratch your dentures. Bleach and other household detergents should be avoided as well.
  • Don’t try to fix or alter your dentures yourself.
  • Put up with discomfort from your dentures, including sensitive or painful gums, or any other oral concern.
