About a few years ago the only option in treating gum recession was with soft-tissue grafting. Grafting is an invasive surgical treatment in which the gum tissue is harvested from the roof of the mouth and then stitched inside to the problem area. This treatment uses scalpels and stitches and is very painful. But now the Pinhole Surgical Technique is another treatment option and a minimally invasive one at that!
What is gum recession and is the Pinhole Surgical Technique effective?
Gum recession is a very serious problem. Receding gums can lead to exposed roots, tooth decay, tooth loss, and diseases. But now treating this serious issue does not have to be so daunting or overwhelming, because now there is the Pinhole Surgical Technique!
So, what is the Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST)? It is a minimally invasive treatment option to help stop gum recession and reverse it all together. PST uses surgical techniques such as coronally positioned flaps.
What is the process?
The thick layer flaps are pulled coronally to cover affected gum recession areas, without the use of scalpels or stitches. Rather, a small pinhole is pierced into the outer layer of the gums into the mucogingival junction, from there, specialized instruments are inserted through the pinhole to guide the flap into a coronally direction to the defected gums. The flap is then held into place with collagen strips. The strips are placed through the same pinhole and pushed under the gums to cover the exposed roots. This supports the new position of the flap and aid healing in the wound.
What is the recovery?
The surgery per site (per pinhole) takes up to 1-2 hours. The recovery period is minimal and is significantly less than grafting. It is advised not to brush or floss the healing area and improvements can be seen even by the first 48 hours! The pinhole is most often completely gone by the next day!
What are the main benefits?
There is less discomfort for the patient both during and after treatment because there is no need for uncomfortable sutures, use of scalpels or other invasive surgical tools. There is also no need for donor tissue which makes it a faster process. The patient recovers much faster compared to traditional grafting and the result is beautiful, natural looking gums with long lasting benefits!
The Pinhole Surgical Technique is quickly becoming a preferred method of treatment since it is knife-free, minimally invasive, and virtually painless! Say goodbye to painful soft-tissue grafting and hello to a treatment of the future!
