Visiting the dentist during your pregnancy is not only safe, it’s also very wise.  Many women shy away from the dentist while pregnant because they think it can be harmful to their unborn baby. Also, many expectant mothers think that having some oral health issues is normal and visiting the dentist isn’t necessary.   Regular dental checkups and cleanings are highly recommended and necessary to oral health, especially when pregnant.

Pregnancy hormones circulating in your body can affect your gums.

Your gums can become inflamed, sensitive and bleed easily. This may deter proper tooth brushing and lead to plaque buildup. Plaque buildup is a breeding ground for bacteria which can soon turn into an infection.  A visit to the dentist for a checkup and proper cleaning can help keep bacteria and infections at bay. This is especially important during pregnancy because a serious a gum infection can lead to preterm labor or low birth weight.

Pregnancy gingivitis, tooth decay and periodontitis are all common side effects of pregnancy. They are also easy to manage at home with twice daily brushing, flossing and rinsing. Rinsing teeth is important due to vomiting from morning sickness. The acid leads to tooth erosion and tooth decay so rinsing your mouth with fluoridated tap water is wise.

Oral health is now considered so important to a healthy pregnancy  that the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends an oral exam be included in the first prenatal visit and that caregivers advise expectant moms to see a dentist.

If you are concerned about cosmetic treatments such as tooth whitening or dental implants, it’s best to postpone these procedures until after your delivery. It is better to have a peace of mind. However, teeth cleanings and regular dental checkups should be routine and not postponed.
