Although veneers are quite strong and can last for many years, like natural teeth, they’re not indestructible. Often, the same things that can damage natural teeth and enamel can also damage or wear down veneers. This includes:

Biting down on hard items such as ice, hard candies and nuts. Using your teeth/veneers as a tool to open bottles, crack nut shells, and untie/tie knots. Staining-while some veneers are quite resistant to staining, they’re not exempt. Coffee, wine, tea, soda and cigarettes can stain veneers overtime.

How can I make my dental veneers last longer?

Clean//brush your veneers just as you would your natural teeth; using non-abrasive toothpaste and make sure to floss regularly. Limit extra exposure to stain causing elements. Rinsing your mouth after exposure with a glass of water helps. Even better, gently brushing your teeth or swishing a glass of water in your mouth to rinse away the potential staining power is good oral health practice as well.

It is important to use a mouth guard while playing sports or any contact activity.

If you grind your teeth, wearing a night guard is wise. This will not only protect your veneers, but also your natural teeth and your jawbone. Tooth grinding, called bruxism, often happens at night, so you might not even be aware that you’re grinding. Bruxism can cause chips, cracks, and permanent damage to teeth, change your bite and jaw alignment, even cause jaw pain and headaches.

Follow your dentist’s recommendation for proper oral care including your veneers and natural teeth and visit your dentist every six months for a regular dental checkup. Be sure to mention any potential changes or concerns.
If you change dentists or visit a specialist, be sure to mention you have veneers before your cleaning. The hygienist will likely use a non-abrasive toothpaste and polish.
